The Martin-Hulburd Family Healing Garden at French Hospital

Holistic Spaces

Healing environments to support our patient’s overall well-being

Hospitals are stressful places, which led us to think about the third item in the ingredients of quality care – compassionate caregivers, advanced technology, and an emphasis on healing environments.

Stress can be significantly reduced by incorporating green spaces and gardens with views dominated by trees, flowers, or water. In fact, just a few minutes of this kind of relaxation can reduce anxiety and pain for patients. This inspired us to incorporate flowing, quiet, and serene spaces that soothe the entire body and mind into the Hospital Expansion Project. In addition to the following green spaces, artwork will adorn the lobby, hallways, and other public areas to soften the clinical aspect of the hospital and bring joy to patients and visitors.

New holistic healing spaces

Our plan includes the following outdoor spaces designed to provide respite from the bustle of the hospital:

  • The recently completed interfaith Swanson Family Chapel and adjacent Martin-Hulburd Family Healing Garden provide a place for quiet reflection, interfaith prayer, and an outdoor garden featuring seating, lush plants, a zen garden, and public art
  • A pedestrian‐oriented entry courtyard at the new hospital main entrance will feature decorative landscaping and public art
  • A mediation room and serenity garden off of the main lobby will provide peaceful sanctuary for prayer and contemplation
  • An outdoor bistro dining patio adorned with lush foliage
  • A rooftop garden terrace on the third floor will offer a serene outdoor location with seating and expansive views to promote relaxation and healing
