Edwin Hayashi, MD and
Howard Hayashi, MD
2025 Louis Tedone, MD Humanitarian Award Recipients
The dedication of Dr. Edwin "Eddie" Hayashi (right) and Dr. Howard Hayashi (left) is foundational to the health and well-being of the Central Coast.
Howard was the founding Director of the SLO County Trauma Program, which coordinated trauma services throughout the county, serving the role until his illness. Eddie is the founding Chairman of French Hospital Medical Center’s Cancer Committee and county wide Tumor Board, which he continues to chair today. Howard was a founding partner of Associated Surgeons, the group which provides surgical services throughout our county, and for which Eddie continues to serve as managing partner. Together they were the first to bring revolutionary minimally invasive procedures to the Central Coast, such as endovascular aortic repairs and videoscopic lung resections. They perform complex operations that no one else in the county performs, allowing patients to stay close to home for their care rather than traveling to tertiary centers outside of the central coast.
Both serve on the faculty at their respective universities, Howard at UC Davis, and Eddie currently in the Surgical Oncology department at UCSF's Medical School and Surgery Residency programs. Howard and Eddie supported a wide range of county-wide interests, including performing free annual sports physicals for San Luis Obispo County high school students, and sponsoring many youth sports teams. Every year, they sponsor programs at the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly and the Clark Center in Arroyo Grande and support Agricultural programs at the California Mid-State Fair. Eddie continues to serve on the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC) Advisory Committee and remains an advocate, partner and resource to the HCRC staff and community.
French Hospital Medical Center Foundation is proud to present the 2025 Louis Tedone, MD Humanitarian Award to Edwin Hayashi, MD and Howard Hayashi, MD. They are a perfect example of kindness and generosity, shown through their volunteer spirit, leadership, and lifelong devotion to community health.
